Louis the Pious

Louis was the last King of devout single Frankish state. Inherited the throne after the death of his father, Emperor Charles the Great, Louis successfully continued paternal policy reforms, but the last years of his rule have been in wars against their own sons and external enemies. The state found itself in deep crisis, which a few years after his death led to the disintegration of the empire and education in its place a few states - the predecessor of modern Germany, Italy and France.

The date of birth of Louis knows a little bit. Fixed all the important events in the state for the current year, did not mention this event. Only in the later works hronistov reported that it happened in the 778 year - shortly before the return of Charlemagne from the Spanish approach. Louis was born at the Villa Kassinogilum (Lat. Cassinogilum), having received the first of the Carolingian name «Louis». There was Louis twin brother, was named Lothar (the first of the Carolingian), but the dead baby.

Like his father, Louis was simple in habits and abstain in the diet. He had profound knowledge in theology and free science, spoke not only in Latin and German, but also in Latin, and Greek language to understand. His contemporaries recognized management Aquitaine reasonable, and measures taken to reduce the taxes were distributed to the whole of Charlemagne Frankish Empire.

According to astronomers, the early Louis revealed deficiencies that severe impact on him as a ruler: he was not able to correctly judge the people and so often listened to bad advisers, was too diligent to the Church and to the waste generous to the clergy, the nobles could not hold on harassment of people. He has not had many qualities needed to manage such a vast state, surrounded by belligerent neighbors. He felt that it was not born to be rulers. If it does not keep friends and wife Irmengarda, he, like his grandfather Karlomanu once removed, would leave the throne for the life of a monk.
